Secure Wireless Aircraft Data Load

Project Overview

Project Abstract

Loading software on an aircraft is not a trivial problem. There are significant design considerations including airline operator procedures, certification, cybersecurity, feasibility with existing infrastructure, etc. The idea of this project is to mockup a simplified aircraft dataload system and add support for wireless dataload. This would give students experience with PKI, threat modeling, aircraft network design, and specific standards and protocols in aviation.

The solution would need to consider existing airline loading procedures, existing airline network security procedures, generic aircraft design constraints (unknown time, no connectivity, certification, etc).

Expected Deliverables

  • Prototype Environment and Software: The prototype implements wireless loading on devkits such as Raspberry Pi's emulating aircraft functions.
  • Project Report: Must explore feasibility of the solution with airline maintenance procedures and show how operator burden is reduced.
